The outdoor education program at SFDS is a Kindergarten through eighth grade program that seeks to instill an understanding of, and appreciation for the cycles, interactions, and processes of the natural world through an outdoor education program. The outdoor setting provides an opportunity for students and teachers to work together in an atmosphere of enthusiasm, sensitivity, and support while increasing students' self-confidence, leadership skills, and appreciation for the environment. Students expand their basic knowledge of ecology, botany, biology, history, and environmental issues including policies and problems.
Ultimately, seventh grade students plan and participate in a five day backpacking trip, learning basic outdoor skills such as trip planning, navigation, and the principles of minimum impact wilderness living and travel.
