Summer teachers are recruited from high schools and colleges around the country, and are hand-picked through a rigorous, multi-step application process. They undergo an intensive training process prior to entering the classroom, attending workshops on curriculum development, classroom management, and other essential topics. Once classes begin, teachers are observed regularly by professional mentor teachers, who offer feedback on their lesson plans and instructional techniques. After completing their summer commitment, teachers can access resources including career advising, loan forgiveness, and a national alumni community.
The summer teaching internship at Breakthrough is highly selective – roughly 10% of applicants are admitted – and is consistently listed as one of The Princeton Review’s Top Ten Internships, along with the White House, Supreme Court, and MTV. A catalytic experience, it launches participants on a journey of self-discovery and inspires them to continue working for social change. A nationwide study found that 73% of Breakthrough teacher alumni continued to work in education after their summer internship.
