Admission Process: 5-8

Step 1: Inquiry

Thank you for your interest in San Francisco Day School! Please note that the online Inquiry Form is now closed for Fall 2017.

In September 2017, the Inquiry Form for Fall 2018 will be available for completion. You will receive your assigned account name and password within 48 hours after submitting your inquiry so that you can begin signing up for admission events. We look forward to learning more about you and your family.

Step 2: School Visits

We invite you to visit our school campus, so that you can experience experience firsthand a "day in the life" of a San Francisco Day School student. Below is a list of various opportunities for you to begin your journey.  We look forward to meeting you and your family!

Step 3: Application

Application for entry in fall of 2018

You can complete your application as early as September 2017. Completed applications along with the application fee ($100*) and a recent family photo are due on Friday, December 15, 2017 by noon to be reviewed by the admission committee for first round decisions in March 2018.

Note: SF Day student enrollment in grades 1-8 depends primarily on attrition. We do not expand our class size in grade 6. For grades 1-8, rolling applications will be accepted throughout the year in the case of unexpected attrition.

Step 4: Required Documents

Student Evaluation Form (required; due by December 15, 2017)

Provide a signed Student Evaluation Form to your child’s current AND former math and language arts teachers.  Ask them to scan and email it to admission@sfds.net* or mail to:

School Record Release Form (required)

Submit a signed Record Release Form to your child's current school office.

Test Scores (required; due by March 1, 2018)

All applicants entering grades 5-8 must submit ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam) test scores reflecting verbal and quantitative ability.
Test scores are due to SFDS by March 1, 2018.

Please sign up early, as space at the local testing site is limited. Be sure to request that ISEE send a copy of your child’s scores to San Francisco Day School.
The SFDS School Code is 054135.
SFDS is an ISEE testing site for students entering grades 5-6. The test will take place at SFDS on Saturday, October 21, 2017.

Student Questionnaire (required; due by January 1, 2018)

We ask all applicants entering grades 5-8 to answer a few written questions to help us get to know you better. These answers should be completed by the student without assistance. Please follow the directions on the Student Questionnaire form.

Step 5: Meetings

Parent/Guardian Meetings & Student Visits

Parents and guardians of applicants to grades 1-8 are welcome to make an online reservation for school visits, tours, open houses and/or receptions. Those who have submitted complete applications for grade levels in which we anticipate an opening may be invited for a Student Visit and a Parent/Guardian Meeting with the Upper School Division Head (Dr. Ruth Bissell). Note these are two separate meetings.  If space allows, we will invite your child for a full day visit in January or February, which they will spend with their current grade level.  After March, we may invite those who elect to stay in the wait pool.

Below is the process for your reference; please note these dates will be refreshed in September for the Fall 2018 admission season. 

  • Complete online Inquiry Form in September for Fall 2018. You will receive your assigned account name and password within 48 hours after submitting your inquiry so that you can begin signing up for the admission events below.
  • Make an online reservation for a School Tour. (recommended)
  • Make an online reservation for an Open House. (optional)
  • Make an online reservation for a Winter Reception. (optional)
  • Register for ISEE. Scores are due by March 1, 2018. (required)
  • Submit completed Student Questionnaire by December 15, 2017. (required)
  • Submit signed Student Evaluation Form; one to your child's current language arts teacher and one to your child's former language arts teacher. (required)
  • Submit signed Student Evaluation Form; one to your child's current math teacher and one to your child's former math teacher. (required)
  • Submit signed Record Release Form to your child’s current school office. (required)
  • Complete online Application with family photo by December 5, 2017. (required)
Note: You will be contacted in January by our admission team to schedule a Student Visit and Parent/Guardian Meeting ONLY IF we have available space for the grade to which you are applying. For grades 1-8, rolling applications will be accepted throughout the year in the case of unexpected attrition.
