Traffic Guidelines

| Traffic Rules | How Traffic Arrival Works | How Traffic Dismissal Works | Parking in the White Zone |

Traffic management at an urban campus presents an array of challenges for everyone: parents and guardians, students, the School, and our neighbors. Masonic Avenue is very busy and cars tend to travel at or above the speed level. The addition of cars during the SFDS morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up increases the congestion, and parking in our neighborhood is limited. For the safety of our students and our neighbors, please understand that drop-off and pick-up of students will take more than five minutes and plan accordingly.

Your safety and the safety of all children and pedestrians on or around our campus is our primary concern. We must also respect each other and our neighborhood. This means that you may have to drive around the block more than once, or walk all the way to the corner crosswalk to cross the street. Your patience, planning, and cooperation are appreciated.

Traffic Rules

Please DO NOT:

  • Park in or block our neighbors' driveways
  • Double park
  • Make U-turns on Golden Gate Avenue
  • Block the Masonic and Central Avenue crosswalks
  • Park on the sidewalk
  • J walk
  • Leave your car parked in the white zone from 7:30 am - 9am or 2pm - 4pm

Look out for Bicycles
Our white zone shares the road with a frequently used bicycle lane. Please be aware that bicycles are traveling west bound on Golden Gate Avenue. Our orange vested grown ups may display a bicycle sign that indicates that a bicycle is approaching. Do not pull out from the white zone when the bicycle sign is being waved. When pulling out of the white zone, try not to block the bicycle lane.

San Francisco Day School – Hands Free Cellular Phones by January 1, 2008
Come January 1, 2008, California will be a hands free cell phone state and we see the intent of the law applicable to our white zone situation. Negotiating the white zone can be stressful: parents are often trying to get a child safely to the curb with lunch and backpack while communicating after school instructions, looking out for bicycles, and soothing baby in backseat. Give yourself a break and, for everyone’s safety, please refrain from cell phone usage during active loading and unloading.

How Traffic Arrival Works

On Golden Gate Avenue, the school has a white zone dedicated to the arrival and dismissal. The white zone is delineated by orange cones. Traveling west bound on Golden Gate, enter the coned white zone to drop off your child. Please pull forward as much as possible to do so. By about 7:45, there will be orange vested grown ups to help your children out of the car. Please stay in your car while the child is unloaded.

How Traffic Dismissal Works

Just like arrival, please enter west bound on Golden Gate Avenue into the orange coned white zone. In order to ensure the safe and efficient flow of traffic, we post three people at various intersections: one at Golden Gate, one at Central Avenue, and one at Masonic Avenue. These staff members will direct drivers during dismissal. If your child is not available for dismissal when you arrive you may be asked to circle the block for another attempt. The cooperation of all drivers is essential to this process. To avoid traffic congestions, do not arrive prior to the scheduled dismissal time.

Parking in the White Zone

7:30am - 8:30am – No Parking
8:30am - 2:00pm – Parking Available
2:00pm - 4:00pm – No Parking

From September 5th – 21st there will be no parking available from 12:00pm – 12:30pm due to early kindergarten dismissal.

Note: During morning traffic arrival you may drop off heavy items in the white zone and one of our staff members will have your items delivered to their destination.
