AEP - Enrichment Class Descriptions

 

Block II (December 4 - March 14)


Digital Photography Class at Kathi O'Leary   

Students will learn how to compose and critique photos and how to admire photography as art. Each week will build on skills of using a digital camera while learning to look through the camera to make better compositions. Projects include portraits and abstracts. The class will also include manipulation in Photoshop so students can be creative and playful with their favorite images. This class is offered to students grades 2-4.  Please note this class is an hour and a half, and there is a$15.00 materials fee for this class.  Minimum 7 students.

Tree Frog Treks:  Science Lab Explorer

Follow in the footsteps of the great minds of physics and chemistry, and make amazing discoveries about the world we live in! We will don our goggles and lab coats to experiment with gravity, centrifugal force, pressure and temperature, and make bubbling lava lamps, slime, and hydrogen soap bubbles that explode into orange flames! Learn about atoms and molecules, mix acids and bases, and create exothermic and endothermic reactions that can power a rocket! Confuse your senses with waves of sound and light, and experience fun and wild science with Tree Frog Treks!

Maximum Movie Making

Ever wanted to be in the movies?  Now you can! This class is both for kids who are expert moviemakers and beginners too!  Working as a "crew", kids use their imagination to think up a movie. They learn how to storyboard their ideas, create costumes and props, plan for special effects, even do simple stunts! They put it all together and create a finished movie! CSB today...Hollywood tomorrow! Each student receives a DVD copy of their movie to bring home.

Please note due to a conflict in schedules this class will start on Monday December 10th.

Hola!

Children learn best by participating in activities that they love most- art, music, dance and games.  Our mission is to make learning a second language a successful experience.  There will be two different classes offered. The first class will be for native speakers that will help children to improve on their conversational skills, as well as reading and writing skills.  The other classes will be for beginning and intermediate Spanish classes for those interested in learning a new language. 

The native speaking class is from 3:45-4:45.  The beginning and intermediate Spanish class is offered at 2:30-3:30 for K-1.

Cooking

A pinch of sugar, a dash of salt, some flour and what do we have?  The beginnings of a wonderful cooking class! Join Ms. Moskowitz in the kitchen at SFDS as we learn all about how healthy and fun cooking can be! We'll learn all about assembling food but also about where it comes from and how to make healthy food choices that are good for our bodies and good for the earth.

This class will be offered at two times, 2:30-3:30 for K-1 and 3:45-4:45 for students in 2-5. 

Grades K-4 Limit 12 students.

Drama

Under the guidance of a highly qualified drama instructor, students will learn a variety of acting skills from improvisation to theatre games.   Drama activities will encourage life skills such as self-esteem, team building, and creativity. 

This class will be offered at two times, 2:30-3:30 for K-1 and 3:45-4:45 for students in 2-5.  Limit 15 students.

Discover the world of Robotics

Design, build, and program your own robots in this fun and educational class.  Students will be given a new robot design challenge each week, like collecting mineral samples on another planet or tackling robot competitors in the Sumo Robo Ring!  Participants will explore electronics, engineering and basic computer programming as they use problem solving skills to design, build and program robots equipped wit the same computer technology that currently guides NASA robots on Mars.

Knitting

This class will be good for the beginning knitter as well as for children with more experience. We will cover the basics of knitting, including casting on, knitting, purling, and binding off. We will explore many varieties of yarn and needle size. Each student will be aided in finding a project that matches his/her fashion sense as well as ability. Some possible projects include hats, scarves, headbands, and purses. 

This class will be offered from 3:45-4:45 for students in grades 1-5. Limit of 10 students per class.

Junior Movie Making

This special class is for kindergartners and first graders only, kids learn how to be movie makers. They work as a group using Storytelling and Dramatic Play, to create a plot, invent characters and act out their movie for the camera. Little movie makers have big fun as they discover the process of transferring imagination to the silver screen and completing a real live movie! Each student receives a DVD-copy of the finished movie to bring home.

Chess

Using stories, songs and dances, we bring the game of chess to children in a fun and exciting way.  This wonderful learning experience not only teaches children to play chess now, but also prepares them for life later by enhancing their critical thinking skills, mental discipline, problem solving and self-esteem. 

This class will be offered at two times, 2:30-3:30 for K-1 and 3:45-4:45 for students in 2-5.  Limit 15 students.

Yoga Kids

Stretch like a dog…balance like a tree…roar like a lion!  Come learn traditional yoga poses in a fun, creative and non-competitive environment.  Yoga is a form of exercise that promotes strength, flexibility, balance, concentration and relaxation.  It’s a perfect way to unwind after school!

This class will be offered at two times, 2:30-3:30 for K-1 and 3:45-4:45 for students in 2-5. Limit of 10 students.

Hip-Hop

Fitness in Transit will introduce your child to the world of Hip-Hop.  A high-energy workout promoting leadership through group teamwork with stamina driven fitness.  Basic dance steps are introduced with an educational overview of historical appreciation of Hip Hop movement from Popping, Locking and Break Dancing to current popular movement.  Each student is lead through a rhythmic warm-up, followed by activities that associate improving coordination and group formations. 

This class will be offered at two times, 2:30-3:30 for K-1 and 3:45-4:45 for students 2-4. Limit 12 students.

Most enrichment classes meet daily from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m., except on Mondays and Fridays, when classes are held from 3:15-4:15 p.m.* Take note a special time for the K-1 classes is 2:30-3:30 p.m.

Classes with low enrollment may be cancelled or both sessions may be combined into one. If classes are cancelled you will be notified. If you do not hear from AEP assume the class will start during the scheduled day and time.
