The Case of the Missing Escrip Support

One day, Detective Dol Phin was called into the San Francisco Day School to help with a strange problem.

Support for an important fundraising program was missing. The program was touted as one of the easiest programs imaginable, didn’t cost a penny, and could potentially raise tens of thousands of dollars. Yet less than half the families supported it.

Detective Dol Phin was perplexed. What could possibly be preventing participation?

After some investigation, the culprits were identified:

  • Busy Lives. Parents at the Day School are too busy to sign up for the program, even though it only takes a few minutes to register.
  • Not a Priority. People want to do it, but it’s not important right now. Maybe in a year or two.
  • Bit of a Hassle. Like opening a new account or renewing one’s license, people would prefer to avoid the hassle. Especially if it involves technology.
  • Lack of Awareness. Some people don’t realize how much money the program raises — or could raise if more people signed up.

Did You Know?
In fact, through eScrip, SFDS tuition assistance earned $10,920 in 2006 — no small amount, considering nobody is writing a check or soliciting a donation.

This amount was raised with fewer than half the SFDS families signed up with eScrip. Moreover, of the registered participants, only 55 percent are active. This means that only about a quarter of the SFDS families who could participate are actually signed up and funneling money the School’s way.

Armed with this newfound information, Detective Dol Phin made several recommendations to help the School raise $15,000 from eScrip in 2007 and get every SFDS family, faculty and staff member registered with eScrip:

  1. Explain how eScrip works and how easy it is.
  2. Give parents a link.
  3. Walk them through the process.

How eScrip Works
SFDS gets a percentage of all purchases made at participating vendors when you use your Safeway frequent shopper card and eScrip-registered credit cards. Participating merchants include Macy’s, Whole Foods, Andronico’s, Mollie Stone’s, Cal-Mart and dozens more. Registration is easy, and if you have children in more than one school, up to three schools can be designated.

New Supporters. Make sure you’re registered with eScrip and if previously enrolled with eScrip through another school, check that you’ve transferred benefits to SFDS.

Current eScrip supporters need to be properly registered. Check your profile and renew your commitment to Safeway by clicking YES on your home page at the eScrip Web site. Hurry — the deadline for this is November 1. If your credit cards have been changed, canceled or if the expiration date has expired, you need to update your profile, to include your new cards or new expiration dates.
