You should be receiving a phone call in the next week or so from an SFDS parent with this simple question: What will you be donating this year to CultureFest?
CultureFest is the Day School’s premier event, raising important funds for tuition assistance. Last year, the event drew some 500 attendees and raised $212,000.Parents are asked to donate at least two items to the annual school auction. The deadline to submit donations is March 15.In order to encourage parents to meet the deadline, a group of 14 parent-volunteers has been enlisted to call all parents and help them with their pledges.
Early donations are especially important this year because this is the first time the auction is going “online.” Some 75 percent of auction items will be offered online starting three weeks before the auction. The move online means that parents will be able to socialize more at the event rather than scurry around in a frantic effort to view items and keep track of bids.
Parents looking for ideas might consider these options:
- Ask your favorite merchants for an item or gift certificate,
- Ask your employer for an item or gift certificate,
- Ask your child’s music teacher, dance teacher, tutor, etc. for a gift certificate,
- If you’re a season ticket holder, offer tickets for dates you can’t make (e.g., the Giants, 49ers, SF Symphony, SF Opera, etc.),
- Turn your hobbies and talents into an offering: photography lesson, jewelry-making session, monthly pie delivery, hour of consulting, etc.
- Team up with other parents to sponsor group dinners, wine-tastings, picnics, etc.
The school is also looking for live-auction items. In previous years, live-auction items have included a trip to London, Bridge School Benefit tickets, and a tour of Pixar studios.
CultureFest is being held on May 3 at the Fort Mason Festival Pavilion. The event consists of a live auction, silent auction, sit-down dinner and entertainment such as dancing and a live band. This year’s “theme” is the ‘80s. Notorious, a top San Francisco live-dance band, has been hired to perform the music.
