Hi All,

This issue of the PA News is filled with articles about of the many exciting events we have to look forward to. For me, the gray days of January were brightened a little when I received the news that a Culturefest theme has been selected -- The 80’s.  What fun!  While we have been coming down from our holidays highs, the committee chairs, Farzam Mostoufi and Omari Patterson, along with those amazing folks in the Development Office have been working on our annual tuition-assistance fundraiser.  This event is a chance for us all to come together as a community to have some fun and show our support for SFDS. Volunteer! Donate! Attend! After all, it is all of us that can make the difference. Did I give away that Oxford Cloth, button-down that I used to love?

One of the things that makes me the most proud to be a part of this community is when I see our students reach out to support causes beyond our walls.  Concert for Community, to be held Friday, February 1st, is one such occasion.  Upper School students come together to put on a magical night of entertainment to raise money for a charity of their choice.  Come to the concert, if you can. I think you will be touched, as I always am, by the talent and by the heart in this community.

A chance to show our heart to our extended family and friends comes around every year at Grandparents and Special Friends Day. This event is coming up on Friday, February 15th.  It is a chance for us to open our doors to some of the most important people in our children’s lives, so that they can get a closer look at what goes on here at school.  Volunteers (and volunteers, only!) will get a chance to participate in this event by helping at the assembly or in the classroom. Hopefully this will encourage some of you to join up, as we are still on the hunt for parent volunteers.

The Parent Education Committee at the Day School, in association with our counselors, has expanded our Café offerings this year.  SFDS Cafés are structured so that parents can get the benefit of discussion with our professional counselors as well as each other about anything that concerns them having to do with their children. The content of the Cafés comes from whatever questions are submitted by parents at a particular grade level.  In this letter you can read about issues raised in the most recent Cafés.  Look for more Cafés in the spring.

How fun to have a chapter of the Girl Scouts here at SFDS!  Read about what some of the girls in the fourth grade are doing with this revered old institution, for whom a key component is community service.

It must be flooding by now.  Stay warm and dry.
