The parent’s organization at SFDS is known as the Parents Association (PA), and each parent at our school is a member of this organization. The President of the Parents Association serves as an ex-officio voting member of the SFDS Board of Trustees.
The main goals and objectives of the Parents Association are:
- Community building: Create an environment in which parents, through discussion and participation, share the diversity of their talents and experiences, and build a community.
- Facilitating communication: Provide an opportunity and forum in which parents feel free to share ideas, experiences, and observations about the School with each other and with the School’s administration and Board of Trustees. Provide the administration and trustees with a forum in which they can discuss the operation of and developments at the school with the parents.
- Coordinating parent volunteer activities: Support the volunteer activities of parents and recognize their essential contributions to the School’s success. The Parents Association conducts activities that support the School’s programs, build community, and raise funds.
- Information sharing: Provide parents with information, forums for discussion and skill-building programs regarding developmental, educational, and social issues facing children and families.
Meetings
Parents Association hosts fall and spring all-school coffees each year and schedules open monthly meetings with specific agendas. These meetings provide time for discussion of topics of general interest, updates on school and volunteer activities.
Parents' Group on Community and Diversity
The Parents' Group on Community and Diversity is a group of parents, faculty, and administrators who encourage and celebrate the diverse community at our school. The committee meets the first Wednesday of each month at 8:30 a.m. (some months there is a potluck at 6:00 p.m. instead of the morning meeting).
Parent Group on Learning Differences
This group meets on the second Wednesday of each month to share articles and resources for SFDS parents seeking information on learning differences. School staff and outside speakers make presentations to the group every other month. Members of the group update a file that includes parents' comments and recommendations for tutors and learning specialists. Interested parents are encouraged to attend.
Please see the Community section of the SFDS on-line calendar for information on up-coming meetings.
