Zeus

By S.C.

The ancient Greeks described Zeus as lord of the universe, chief judge of the Olympians, and god of the sky, earth, and heaven. He was a very powerful and generous god. He shared with his brothers and sisters. His brothers and sisters were: Poseidon, lord of the sea, Hades, lord of the underworld, Demeter, goddess of the harvest, Hera, goddess of marriage and Queen of Olympus, and Hestia, goddess of the hearth. He was known as the bearded man and had a shield with a picture of a big eagle on it. He also had lightning bolts as a weapon, which was feared by the Greeks. Zeus was a feared god that the ancient Greeks respected. He saved his brothers and sisters and defeated his father Cronus.  Their father, Cronus, ate Zeus’s brothers and sisters because he didn’t want anybody to overthrow him. So his mother, Rhea, hid Zeus so that Cronus wouldn’t eat him. When Zeus grew up he married Métis for his first wife. Métis said to Zeus to trick Cronus into eating a magic herb, which made him throw up all of his siblings. All of his brothers and sisters helped Zeus to defeat Cronus. Zeus was and still is very important to the Greeks. Zeus controlled and can change the weather, which affected the crops. He brought peace to the Greeks by defeating Cronus and other foul creatures. Lightning and thunder was said to be from Zeus that signified power. Zeus locked up any god that fought or disagreed with his laws, such as the Titans. Like humans Zeus isn’t perfect such having a temper or being greedy. Even though the ancient Greeks thought the gods might be perfect, many of their characteristics were not perfect. Zeus was a well-respected god and a great leader to the Greeks.
