Theseus By Stephen Theseus was the legendary Greek king of Athens, and he still is a hero to many Greeks today. Theseus was a tremendous warrior and a strong athletic icon. Theseus was the Ionian founding hero. Like the other founding heroes Perseus, Heracles, and Camdus, Theseus had to defeat an enemy with tremendously high stature. The Legend of the Minotaur is how we remember Theseus most significantly. Theseus’ enemy was King Minos and his sidekick Minotaur, a creature that was half man half bull. Theseus journeyed to the labyrinth to find the hidden Minotaur. To defeat the half man half bull, Theseus slayed him with a magic sword that King Minos’ daughter Ariadne gave to him. Theseus’ strength and power has still carried on into modern day Greece. According to the myth The Frogs Aristophanes, Theseus’ ways and doings have turned into everyday rituals of the Athenians. Those rituals are competitive team sports, festivals and decadence. This Greek mythology character makes myths come to life. |
