Demeter

By Hannah

The beautiful Demeter is one of the twelve main Greek gods. Demeter had a very important role and function in ancient Greece. Zeus was her brother so she got to live on Mount Olympus.  Her daughter Persephone is the Maiden of Spring and never ventures away from her mom unless she is with Hades.  Since Demeter was the goddess of harvest, she had to bless crops or they wouldn’t grow.  However, she could also refrain from blessing crops and as a result, in one third of the year everything died and famine rose. We now refer to this time as winter.  The myth "Demeter and Persephone," the Seasons of Time, is a story about how Demeter makes the seasons by mourning for Persephone while she is in the underworld.  Many variations of this myth existed in ancient Greece.  Many accomplishments of Demeter still exist today.  Seasons like winter, when she is grieving for Persephone, is one example.  Agriculture and how to sow seeds was shown to the world by Demeter.  Since agriculture was such a big aspect of ancient Greece Demeter is now remembered as one of the most important Greek gods.
