Heartbeat is a book with no-one plot. It is a chapter book, although the chapters don’t have page limits. It is about a young girl named Annie who can’t stop running. Her mom even said she was running inside her mom’s stomach! But Annie can’t run alone, so in the park her best friend Max joins her. The loud slapping of their bare feet hit the ground as they run swiftly until they reach a red bench along the park path. Her Grandfather lives in her house, with a memory not so bright. A dad and a pregnant mom live with her, too. Her life is stressful and exhausting, but fun as well. I like how the author describes how they run in any weather. (Even snow!) The text lines make the book different from many others. I laughed silently when Annie’s grandfather eats an apple, which Annie is supposed to draw as an assignment from art. But the good part is, Annie, being as smart as she is, thinks up an idea, which makes the 100 pictures of the apple she was supposed to draw unique and different from the other student’s pictures. To tell you the truth, I can’t really say there was any part of this story I didn’t like. Annie loves running, but her least wanted thing to do was join the track team. But Max has always wanted to be on the track team. To make a long story short, Max asks Annie to watch him at the tracks. Annie of course agrees. When Max says “you’d better be there, Annie,” Annie replies with a yes, and Sharon Creech describes her feelings when she says it as, confused, baffled, bewildered, disarranged, discomposed, disoriented, embarrassed flustered, mortified, muddled, and perplexed. It sounds sort of like a list poem. It has humor. It’s a very descriptive sentence, and that’s not the only one, there are tons of good descriptive and creative sentences. I recommend this book. I’d say ages 8+, some children might need adult help, but still, they would enjoy it. I recommend this book because it draws you in. When I started on the first page, I couldn’t stop reading! This book has enough plots and sub-plots, that I think any reader will enjoy this book! |
