| Silk Umbrellas Are you someone who loves a gently told novel with a plot that just makes you want more and more until you are so full and you know you can't eat any more of it . If you like those kinds of novels then you are in for a treat. Silk Umbrellas by Carolyn Marsden must be the book you are looking for. It is about an 11 year old girl named Noi. Her family is in need of money. She remembers the days when she would sit in the Thailand jungle with her grandmother and sister. Her sister mixing paint and her grandmother painting on silk umbrellas. She also remembers when her grandmother asked her to paint a butterfly on one of the umbrellas. Her sister has to work in a factory to earn money. Her grand mother is to tired to work. She to might have to go to a factory soon. Can she help make money from what she has learned from her grand mother or will her fear catch up to her? Some of the strengths in this book the author is very descriptive and shows a lot of characteristics. I felt like I was in the book when she was sad. Sometimes I would go to bed with sticky cheeks because of the sadness and how sweet it was. The book was very touching. I don't think that this book had any weaknesses. One thing that did make me scared was when Noi's grandmother could not work I thought she was going to die. This passage from Silk Umbrellas shows how descriptive the author is. “Noi remembered washing the dirt off the crinkly cabbage leaves and snaky green beans as long as her forearm.” I can really see Noi washing the vegetables. I think that the passage shows a lot of character. That's what I like about this book. I would recommend this book because it shows that not all of us are fortunate, however Noi makes the best of it and she always has a spark of hope. I would recommend his novel to 7 to 12 year old readers. A reader who likes fiction and more tell than action would like this book. I think everybody should read this book. |
