| Harriet the Spy By Louise Fitzhugh Harriet is a spy. She keeps a notebook and writes things about people. Every afternoon, after she’s eaten her cake and milk, she goes out to spy on her neighbors. Most of the time, Harriet writes mean things — even about her best friends, Sport and Janie. After her nurse, Ole Golly, leaves, things go totally downhill. Her friends find her notebook and see all the nasty things she’s written and Harriet has to find out how to gain back their trust and spy at the same time! I liked the way the author sort of surprises you in some of her writing. There is a lot of detail, especially in Harriet’s notes. I think that sometimes, some words were repeated to often and that could have been better. I can really see the sentence, Miss Dodge blinked her giant eyes, fluttered her tape measure, and dropped several pins from her mouth. It has a lot of wonderful describing words that stand out well in the book and I like the fact that it is at the end of the chapter. I also like Harriet was off and running again. Clackety clack, went her feet on the parquet floor, then thrump, thrump, thrump up the carpeted stairs. She ran all the way into her little bathroom. She had the fleeting sensation of being tired as she stood over the basin washing her hands. I like it because I can hear and feel what Harriet is hearing and feeling. I really recommend Harriet the Spy because the writing is very detailed and easy to understand. Some parts in the book are rather funny. Readers who are ages 8 and up that like long fiction books would enjoy this book. I hope you read Harriet the Spy! |
