The Tale of Despereaux
By Kate DiCamillo

I am writing a book report on a book called, "The Tale of Despereaux."  It's about a young mouse born in a mouse community.  He is different from the other mice.  He had big ears and was small.  He fell in love with a princess who was human.  His love for her was too hard to break.  He was sentenced to death.  The story is about how Despereaux has to save the princess from a servant girl and a vengeful rat.

I think that some of the strengths of the book are how the author describes the characters.  This is very interesting.  I like the adventures that Despereaux has to go through, they are very exciting.

"If what was in front of Despereaux was too horrible to contemplate, what followed behind him was, perhaps, even worse:  rats, a happy, hungry, vengeful parade of rats.  Their noses up in the air, sniffing, sniffing."  This paragraph makes me shiver, but it also makes me want to keep reading to find out what happens next.

I highly recommend this book because it is a good, thrilling book that you do not want to put down.  Ages 9 and above would enjoy this book.  The words can be hard to read.  If you like adventures and an almost fairy tale, this is the book for you.
