The pupil is the dark-colored area in the center of the iris, that opens and closes due to the amount of light that enters. When there is a lot of light the pupil begins to contract and smaller. This limits the amount of light that enters the eye, and then follows to the back of the eye in the retina. When there is little or no light, the iris dilates the pupil, widening it so that more light can enter the eye. During the day, when it is sunny the pupil will appear smallest to let minimal amount of light through. During the night, when it is dark the pupil will appear larger to let as much light as possible through.
