The cornea is a a clear, circular shaped object which masks the front of the eye. It is the eyes exterior layer. Even though the cornea looks clear, it is actually a very organized groups of proteins and cells. There are no blood vessels in the cornea to shield it from bacteria. That is because the Cornea must remain clear in order to reflect light. Instead, tears and the aqueous humor give the cornea its nourishment. The cornea has five layers. It has two main functions. One is to protect the eyes from germs and bacteria. The other function of the cornea is to control the amount of light going into the eye. The cornea is a very important part of the eye.
