The Dissection: Optic Nerve

The optic nerve was the last part of the eye that we looked at in our dissection. It was quite hard to find, because it almost blended into the sclera. It was also covered in fat. However, when we did find it, it looked short, stubby, and limp. How could this limp part of the eye be responsible for such an important job? The optic nerve was limp and stubby because it was cut short when taken from the cow. We looked around the nerve, and on the inside of the eye, saw a ball of grey. This was the retina that would usually be spread out against the sclera. We pulled on the retina and spotted all of the various nerves leading into it from the optic nerve. The optic nerve was covered in a pink layer called the myelin sheath, however, the actual nerves that it contains are more of a yellowish color.
