8th Grade Cow Eye Dissection

Dissection Page

We did not see the suspensory ligaments when we dissected the cow eye. We did see what they are attached to, the lens and the ciliary body. First, the teacher passed out the materials. The materials were a cow's eye, gloves, dissection tray, scissors, and a razor blade. Then we removed the outer fat and muscle surrounding the eye. We took the razor blade and cut around the edge of the cornea. As we cut, the aqueous humor seeped from the gash created by the razor blade. We took out the clear and hard lens. It was somewhat slimy and hard. When placed on text, it magnified it. We reached into the juicy depths of the inner eye and pulled out the iris. We put it under the microscope and it looked very interesting. We then removed the vitreous humor, a clear jell like substance that helps the eye maintain its shape. That loosened up the retina because the vitreous humor holds the retina in place. We could see the shiny turquoise tapetum located behind the retina. We turned the eye inside out. This was a very disgusting process that resulted in a lot of juices being squirted out of the eye. The juices were black. This experience was quite interesting and it will never escape from my mind, no matter how long I live.
