The Sclera is one of the three eye coverings layers: the Choroid, the Retina, and the Sclera. It is the tough, white, outer portion of the eye that covers everything except for the Cornea (the membrane that covers part of the Sclera). It is most commonly referred to as the "white of the eye." It is made up of a tough, fibrous tissue that extends from the cornea to the optic nerve.
It helps to protect they eye from any dangerous particles that might might damage the eye, such as dust, dirt, twigs etc. In fact the Sclera is known as "the eyes protective container." Since it is so tough, it is very difficult for anything to damage it.
