8th Grade Cow Eye Dissection

The retina nerve fibers that converge at the back of the eye is called the optic nerve. The optic nerve, when cut open, looks like a bunch of wires. The optic nerve is not one single nerve but is actually made up of many nerves. The optic nerve sends electrical impulses into the brain. The brain then receives the images and interprets them.

The blind spot is an area of the eye where there are no photoreceptor cells (rods and cones) so it can't interpret that point. Rods see color and cones see black and white. It is located where the optic nerve leaves the retina. The blind spot is also known as the optic disc. The blind spot isn't noticeable by you because the other eye covers the blind spot up by replacing its image with the image that the other is missing. Each blind spot is different for each person so there is no specific place where one person can't see.
