Fifth Grade Science

 

In the fall, students meet in the science lab two days a week, with one class being a 90-minute double period. In the spring, another single period per week is added for a total of three classes per week.

  • The Moon, Earth, and tides, and their influence on estuaries
  • Fish anatomy, adaptations, and habitat
  • Upwelling, photosynthesis, plankton and the food chain
  • Bay discovery voyage oceanographic field trip
Topography and River Systems
  • Slope, erosion, volume and velocity
  • Origin and deposition of the bay and delta sediments
  • The chemistry and composition of bay water and its tributaries
Biological Classification System
  • Origins and logic of classification
  • Evolution and diversity of life
  • Five kingdoms and their characteristics
  • Modern taxonomy
Arthropods
  • Variety and diversity of arthropods
  • Arthropod characteristics and habitats
  • Crustacean and Isopod behavior and response experiments
  • Insect morphology and adaptations
The Physics of Bubbles
  • Initial observations of bubble structure
  • Measuring diameter and volume of a hemisphere
  • Bubble solutions, variables, and controls
