First Grade Science

 

Students meet once a week in the science lab for 45 minutes. To maximize learning opportunities the curriculum is flexible and remains open to variation each year.

Curriculum

Introduction to the Science Lab
  • Working in cooperative groups
  • Following directions for simple lab activities
  • Measuring with a variety of tools
  • Use of dissection microscopes
Mystery Festival
  • Using scientific processes to analyze a fictional crime scene
  • Finger printing
  • Testing powders
  • Developing theories
Animals
  • Classifying vertebrates and invertebrates
  • Identifying the classes of vertebrates
  • Taking care of pets
  • Adaptations in the animal world
Balance and Motion (Foss Kits)
  • Center of mass; investigations with balance
  • Investigations into spinning and rolling, with spinners, cups, balls, and wheel-and-axle systems
  • Roller coasters; whole-class project with foam tubes and marbles
Gardens
  • Seeds: structures, dispersal, germination
  • Plant growth, flower structure
  • Bugs in the garden; identification and relationships with plants
Oceans
  • Exploring the properties of water
  • Floating and sinking
  • Making boats with sails and paddles
  • Tide pool life
  • Crabs and mollusks, a comparison of anatomy
