The eighth grade physical education curriculum is based on exposing students to a lifestyle that includes sportsmanship, health/fitness knowledge, and skill development. Our goal is to instill the knowledge that will allow students to lead a productive and healthy life. They participate in games and activities that reinforce this philosophy during 45-minute periods, three days a week. The curriculum features two- to three-week units on specific sports that incorporate skills and rules of games. Over the course of the year, we cover the following sports:
soccer
volleyball
ultimate frisbee
flag football
basketball
lacrosse
badminton
pickleball
floor hockey
softball
track and field
Fitness is a daily theme in class. We expect students to participate in a variety of fitness activities including cardiovascular fitness, strengthening, flexibility, and agility. Students are evaluated in three areas: effort, participation, and sportsmanship. Students should be prepared to exercise by wearing appropriate (non-restrictive) clothing, which includes athletic shoes.
In addition to our sport units, the students will play various cooperative games, tag games, and a variety of creative ball games throughout the year. Throughout our curriculum, the department tries to encourage our students to be physically active and appreciate the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
