In the eighth grade, music classes concentrate on building a musical community
emphasizing large group and individual performance. Projects are constructed
to reflect the National Standards for music and demonstrate the students' acquired
skills. Vocally, eighth graders focus on using their appropriate singing voices
consistently, extending their vocal ranges and projecting their sound while
exploring the choral topics of diction, vowel placement, and tone production.
Additional emphasis is placed on the changing voice and vocal harmony. A significant
part of the eighth grade experience is centered around the process and performance
of the year-end production. Combining the experiences of the music, drama, and
art departments is a wonderful interdisciplinary arts project. Eighth graders
have the opportunity to extend their musical experience by participating in
the Upper School Chorus, instrumental ensembles, and After School Music Program. Performance practice
and audience etiquette continue to be a cornerstone of the music program; all
students perform throughout the year at assemblies and the evening Soiree.
