In the sixth grade, music classes concentrate on building a musical community
emphasizing large group and individual performance. Vocally, sixth graders focus
on using their appropriate singing voices consistently, extending their vocal
ranges and projecting their sound while exploring the choral topics of diction,
vowel placement, and tone production. These skills are practiced as they review
and expand their theoretical knowledge. Important curricular components include
minor scales, mixed meters, compound meter, and chords. Students explore the
alto recorder and continue developing proper fingering, tonguing, and breathing
techniques. Learning the alto recorder is a wonderful tool to continue our constant
goal of musical literacy. Emphasis is placed on sight-reading, improvisation,
and in-tune, beautiful playing. Besides alto recorder, students have the opportunity
to perform on the pitched percussion instruments. Proper 3-mallet and playing
techniques along with complex ostinati, drones, and improvisation are the focus
of our classes. Sixth graders have the opportunity to extend their musical experience
by participating in the Upper School Chorus, instrumental ensembles, and the After School Music Program.
Performance practice and audience etiquette continue to be a cornerstone of
the music program; all students perform throughout the year at assemblies and
the evening Soiree.
