Music classes in the fifth grade concentrate on building a musical community
emphasizing large group and individual performance. Vocally, fifth graders focus
on using their appropriate singing voices consistently, extending their vocal
ranges and projecting their sound while exploring the choral topics of diction,
vowel placement, and tone production. These skills are practiced as they review
and expand their theoretical knowledge; dotted notes and rhythms that occur
off the beat are internalized. Fifth graders will work with the major scale
and continue to develop their sight-singing abilities. This task integrates
the vocal work with our melodic and rhythmic skills and is a wonderful representation
of our developing musicianship. Soprano recorders, along with the pitched percussion
instruments, continue to play an integral role in music classes. Students have
the opportunity to extend their musical experience by participating in the Upper
School Chorus, instrumental ensembles, and the After School Music Program. Fifth graders also take part in
the San Francisco Symphony's Adventures in Music program, which brings diverse
musical ensembles from the Bay Area to our school and culminates in a trip to
the Symphony. Performance practice and audience etiquette continue to be a cornerstone
of the music program; all students perform throughout the year at assemblies
and the evening Soiree.
