Music in third grade continues building a musical community and creating an
atmosphere of enjoyment. Through a variety of songs, chants, and movement experiences,
the students focus on the extended pentatonic scale, three beat meter, and conventional
note names. They continue developing their melodic and rhythmic proficiency
through the study of soprano recorder as well as singing. Students demonstrate
their musicianship by reading from and writing on the staff, identifying pitches
within known and unknown songs, and improvising. Use of Curwen hand signs, solfege
syllable names for pitches, and rhythm names have proved to be valuable tools
in helping our third graders develop their musicianship. Instrumental work is
strengthened by the use of pitched and non-pitched instruments combining more
difficult layered rhythm, cross rhythms, and ostinati. Third graders extend
their music opportunities through the Adventures in Music program sponsored
by the San Francisco Symphony and can choose to participate in Dolphin Singers, instrumental ensembles, and some instrumental lesson offerings. Performance practice and audience
etiquette continue to be a cornerstone of the music program; all students perform
throughout the year at assemblies and the evening Soiree.
