Second Grade Library Media Program

 

The Library Media Center curriculum:

Promotes multicultural and global awareness through literature and other library media.
Second Graders will:
  • Listen to stories and world folklore from a wide range of cultures
  • Identify an author’s perspective
  • Experience literature as a mirror of the reader’s experience or a privileged glimpse through a window to other’s experiences
  • Use simple maps to find location of places from stories
  • Develop a global awareness through non-fiction books
  • Use children’s periodicals that reflect a wider world
Supports and encourages an individual’s passion for literature
Second Graders will:
  • Listen to stories with attentive and purposeful listening and viewing skills
  • Review care of books and other materials
  • Learn to ask themselves questions about
  • Demonstrate knowledge of favorite book titles
  • Recognize favorite authors and illustrators
  • Have an author of the month
  • Engage in “Book Talks”
Provides a framework for the organization of information
Second Graders will:
  • Review the operations and procedures of LMC
  • Identify all sections of the library using the Dewy Decimal system
  • Alphabetize to the second letter
  • Use reference materials for a research project
  • Review basic media formats
  • Learn how to use a table of contents
  • Begin to learn dictionary skills
Teaches students how to access information
Second Graders will:
  • Search for books electronically by key word, author, subject, and title
  • Select reference materials with assistance and independently
  • Restate the scope and ground rules of a task without prompting
  • Identify existing knowledge of a topic and independently list areas where more information is needed
  • Frame an essential question related to a topic of interest or assignment with assistance
  • Describe a course of action to address an essential research question
  • Demonstrate ability to find materials through the electronic database
  • Select appropriate materials for a research topic with assistance and independently
  • Locate and use materials from all areas of the library
  • Use one resource outside of LMC – libraries, museums, people, and electronic resources
Promotes a critical and creative understanding of information
Second Graders will:
  • Determine the basic information in materials
  • Identify a sequence of events
  • Recall content
  • Learn to ask questions about what they read
  • Interpret simple charts, graphs and tables
Provides a framework for students to analyze mass media
Second Graders will:
  • Develop an awareness of the persuasion tools used in mass media
  • Understand that media requires thoughtful evaluation
  • Deconstruct age appropriate commercial movies and advertisements
  • Analyze the effects of media on an individual, family, community, and city
  • Discuss male and female stereotypes in children’s programs
Promotes social responsibility and an ethical understanding of the use and generation of ideas
Second Graders will:
  • Review the concept of ownership of ideas and information
  • Review the concept of giving credit for information
  • Review the concept of fair use
  • Review the concept of responsible use
Advances communication skills through oral, written, visual, and multimedia applications
Second Graders will:
  • Use negotiation skills to resolve a hypothetical conflict
  • Become familiar with basic persuasion techniques
  • Present an original research report on an animal of their choice
  • Combine media formats to promote a favorite book
