First Grade Library Media Program

 

The Library Media Center curriculum:

Promotes multicultural and global awareness through literature and other library media.
First Graders Graders will:
  • Listen to stories and folklore from a wide range of cultures
  • Identify perspective in literature as a reader (listener)
  • Discuss the concept of diversity as a way to learn about others
  • Experience literature as a mirror of the reader's experience or a privileged glimpse through a window to other's experiences
  • View maps of places from stories
  • Develop a global awareness through non-fiction books
  • View children's periodicals that reflect a wider world
Supports and encourages an individual's passion for literature
First Graders Graders will:
  • Listen to stories with attentive and purposeful listening and viewing skills
  • Continue to ask themselves questions about the author's purpose in writing the book
  • Demonstrate knowledge of favorite book titles
  • Recognize favorite authors and illustrators
  • Learn about authors
  • Make book recommendations to fellow students
Promotes stewardship of our communal resources
First Graders graders will:
  • Learn that the LMC is valuable shared resource
  • Continue to demonstrate proper care for library materials
  • Show responsibility in caring for materials and returning them on time
  • Respect the library as a quiet place for all students to read, write, study and think
Provides a framework for the organization of information
First Graders Graders will:
  • Review organization of the LMC
  • Learn the Dewy Decimal System
  • Alphabetize to the first and second letter
  • Learn about the Reference Section
  • Differentiate between basic media formats (print, audio, visual, electronic, etc.) and understand the different characteristics of each
Teaches students how to access information
First Graders Graders will:
  • Begin to use the LMC's electronic database (OPAC)
  • Use OPAC searches to find books by subject and keyword
  • Select appropriate materials independently
  • Demonstrate awareness of resources outside of LMC – libraries, museums, people, and electronic resources
Promotes a critical and creative understanding of information
First Graders Graders will:
  • Determine the basic information in materials using oral clues
  • Identify a sequence of events from a story
  • Recall content from fiction and non-fiction materials
  • Distinguish differences between fiction and non-fiction
Provides a framework for students to analyze mass media
First Graders Graders will:
  • Develop an awareness of the persuasion tools used in mass media
  • Understand that media requires thoughtful evaluation
  • Examine age appropriate commercial movies and advertisements
  • Think about the effects media has on an individual, family, and community
Promotes social responsibility and an ethical understanding of the use and generation of ideas
First Graders graders will:
  • Review the concept of ownership of ideas and information
  • Review the concept of giving credit for information
Advances communication skills through oral, written, visual, and multimedia applications
First Graders Graders will:
  • Review negotiation and persuasion techniques to solve a hypothetical conflict
  • Make an oral presentation on a favorite book, story, or poem
  • Write and illustrate a picture book
  • Prepare a multimedia presentation on a favorite piece of literature or poetry
