Students are evaluated on their progress in the following areas with these
terms:
- Rarely
- Inconsistently
- Consistently
- Exceptionally
The following items are considered in each skill area:
Practices of an Effective Learner
- Is punctual and prepared (finishes assignments on time)
- Listens carefully to both peers and adults
- Follows verbal and written instructions
- Asks thoughtful questions and actively seeks help when needed
- Displays enthusiasm for subject
- Makes up work after absence
- Works well both independently and in groups
- Keeps class materials organized
Reading
- Finishes assigned reading within allotted time
- Understands main points in works read
- Responds to details and connects ideas and abstract concepts
- Is aware of the writer's point of view
- Identifies and interprets literary terms in works read
- Appreciates the experience of reading
Writing: Process
- Demonstrates understanding of each writing task
- Brainstorms and generates writing ideas
- Employs a variety of useful pre-writing methods
- Follows grammar, spelling, punctuation, and usage conventions
- Revises word choice, structure, and mechanics
- Sets a direction and organizes clearly and appropriately from first
line to last
Writing: Craft
- Writes with an awareness of purpose and audience
- Responds to each writing assignment with imagination and interest
- Uses vivid and precise words in writing
- Writes with attention to pace and rhythm by using transitions and varying
sentence lengths
- Uses evidence and concrete language to support viewpoints and arguments
- Writes coherent, unified, and logical papers
Speaking and Listening
- Is attentive and focused on task at hand
- Articulates thoughts clearly
- Participates constructively in class discussion
- Builds on discussion points to further classroom conversation
- Engages in small and large group discussions
- Prepares and delivers effective oral presentations (second semester)
