Students become acquainted with doing art in a designated space. They
begin to think of art as a subject and they feel respected as working artists.
Students learn how to value the unique characteristics of each "artist
of the month." They are getting used to looking at artist's books and to
responding to them on a visceral level.
Technical Skills / Making Art
Students develop basic hands-on skills while they learn how to slow
down their process in order to convey ideas.
Students develop their sensory skills and acknowledge the tactile quality
of materials.
Students develop a strong sense of themselves as individuals and as
artists and experience this positively.
Understanding of Concepts / Art Vocabulary
Students begin to understand that art has meaning. They are discovering
technical vocabulary as it applies to their own art work.
Students are encouraged to talk about their own art throughout the
process. They are discovering that art is a form of communication.
Critique / Critical Thinking
Students learn how to take turns listening and talking about art in
a non-judgmental environment.
Students learn how to respond to peers' and teacher's questions, to
feel encouraged, engaged, and focused on the subject of art.
Students learn how to ask each other questions relating to techniques
or to the artistic concepts.
Work Space
Students learn how to work in a more open structure and to deal with
the safety issues of the art room.
Students become familiar with the presence of a parent art volunteer
in the room.
Students learn the discipline and routine of demonstration, work time,
and sharing time. They learn the specific tasks of clean-up.
