Summer Programs at SFDS

Breakthrough San Francisco’s intensive six-week summer program drew 20 college and high school students from schools such as Columbia, Stanford, Harvard, and Yale. Eight-four students, fifth & sixth graders from public schools around the city, participated in a full day with four academic classes each morning, afternoon elective classes, and educational field trips.

The program generated an enthusiasm for learning through a wide range of classes such as: Math, English, The Psychology of Happiness, Physics, African American History, Archeology, Environmental Science, Reading the News, Photography, Music, Arts & Crafts, Sports & Games, Japanese, and French.

Following are some program highlights:

  • An outdoor education elective culminating in a weekend trip to Point Reyes, where 12 sixth graders camped in tents under the stars.
  • A gardening program in which student maintained the AME church garden across the street planting beans, making herbal teas, potting flowers.
  • Friday special events including, Olympic Spirit Day, Talent Share, Culture Day and College Day.

The summer ended with a celebration in which all families came and watched the students perform skits they had developed about what they had learned all summer.

2008 Dolphin Soccer Camp
The 9th annual Dolphin Soccer Camp was a huge success. The camp took place at USF during the week of June 23rd. We had an enthusiastic and highly motivated group of campers and our coaching staff was outstanding. Campers spent the week learning basic fundamental skills, tactics of the game and lots of fun camp games. Each day concludes with scrimmage games where players are challenge to use their newly acquired skills.

2008 Dolphin Team Camp
This was the inaugural year for Dolphin Team Camp. Our seventh grade boys participated in a team camp with another team from West Marin. Each day the boys began with a skill and fitness workout and concluded with a game against the other squad. The camp has plans to expand to four teams next summer.

Art Forts 2008
Young SFDS artists joined with four Bay Area artists for a week-long program during which they sharpened their construction skills in the areas of design, model making, woodworking, sewing and installation arts. The week began by learning how to play and build with a variety of recycled building materials including wood, mud/clay, and fabric. By the end of the week, the playground was filled with forts of all shapes and sizes. At the close of program, parents joined us for a potluck and we spent the afternoon playing. It was a wonderful experience for everyone involved..

Volleyball/Basketball Camp
Campers had a great time this summer learning the skill it takes to make it on the court! We had two different crews which consisted of alum, college players and SFDS graduates in high school. It was a wonderful way to reconnect with kids that had attended SFDS 10 years ago & an incredible community experience.
