SFDS Undergoes Major Facilities Improvements

Summer is certainly not synonymous with vacation for everyone at SFDS. This summer, SFDS embarked on our largest maintenance effort in the last ten years. In order to ensure a safe and healthy physical environment for our students, Facilities Manager Danny De Leon worked with Business Manager Carolyn Sasser and the SFDS Board to develop a comprehensive, proactive plan to upgrade and repair key areas throughout the School. A major emphasis of the plan was to address water drainage and sealing areas vulnerable to water seepage. The plan was reviewed and approved by both the Board and the Finance Committee. The projects were financed through the School’s Provision for Plant Replacement, Renewal and Special Maintenance Fund.

Maintenance projects included the following:

Upgraded Life Safety System
This project included upgrades to the fire panel and security system, a new school-wide public announcement system, a new Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and newly synchronized clocks (which our teachers love).

Courtyard Improvements
This project will result in drainage repair, a wheelchair accessible entrance, a new elegant exterior design with professional landscaping that will provide year-round color (by Penny Magrane), a new gas BBQ and improved lighting for outdoor events. Courtyards improvements are still underway and will be ready by early November.

Replacement of Lobby Rooftop
The new rooftop covers the original building, extending over the lobby, front office, art room, and adjoining hallway. This is the first time the roof has been replaced in nearly 20 years.

Rooftop Playground Repairs
This project included improving drainage on playground surface, repairing the steel columns and base collars on the fence surrounding the playground, and stucco repair. We were able to save more of the playground mural than was anticipated, leaving some room along the bottom of the walls for future art projects.

Painting of Building Exterior
The eastern exterior walls along Golden Gate Avenue, wrapping around the parking lot, and extending to the end of the playground, were patched and painted.

Carpeting & Re-Painting
Carpets were replaced and/or walls were painted in twelve rooms throughout the School, nine of which were classrooms.

Seminar Room Improvements
New modular furniture was purchased for the seminar room, allowing for increased flexibility in room layouts.

New Skylight
The skylight in the hallway outside of the art room was replaced, allowing more light into that area of the school.

Sidewalk Repairs
The sidewalk alongside the building perimeter was repaired according to city requirements.

In addition to the above projects, regular summer maintenance projects included refinishing the gym floor, cleaning all school carpets, polishing all floors, and routine repairs throughout the building.

SFDS thanks Danny De Leon, Rafael Benavides, Thu Vuong, Jose Hernandez, Jose Ramirez, Jorge Recinos, and our various building contractors for all of their hard work this summer to help us improve our school facilities.
