SFDS and Community Neighborhood Associations
Over the summer, San Francisco Day School worked with community neighborhood associations to promote the safety of our community.
On August 14th, the North of Panhandle Neighborhood Association (NOPNA) held a Peace Walk to honor Aubrey Abrakasa, a young man who was tragically killed nearby his home in the Western Addition the afternoon of August 14, 2006. In addition to helping prepare for the march, SFDS organized a community BBQ and tag sale of used SFDS equipment to help the family of Aubrey Abrakasa purchase a headstone for their son. With the help of SFDS parents and community members, the School raised $1,400 to donate to Abrakasa’s family.
SFDS also created an agreement with our local Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) Training Programs. NERT is a free training program for individuals, neighborhood groups and community-based organizations in San Francisco. It helps individuals learn the basics of personal preparedness and prevention. The training also includes hands-on disaster skills that help individuals respond to a personal emergency and act as members of a neighborhood response team. The agreement between SFDS and NERT states that in the event of an emergency, SFDS will advise Western Addition and NOPA NERTs of the availability of our emergency food, water, shelter and supplies. In addition, we amended our school’s emergency procedures to ensure that our communication team will be in close contact with the Western Addition and NOPA NERTs. We have also offered our facility for a future NERT training.
