Coming Soon: Connect Online Using SFDS 411

Always on the lookout for new and ingenious ways to build the Day School community, the Parents Association has decided to venture into cyberspace and will soon be launching the School’s first online community network for parents.

The network will be known as SFDS 411. It will be open to all Day School parents, who will be able to share ideas, join in discussions, make announcements, post photos, and generally schmooze with their fellow SFDS parents — all without leaving the comfort of their computer.

“It’s very exciting,” said Elaine Foppiano, president of the Parents Association. “We’re all looking at it and seeing what it will do for the community. It will evolve and change, and that’s the exciting part!”

Many parents already use email to communicate. But email is limited in its use. SFDS 411 won’t replace email altogether, but it will cast a wider net, allowing more parents to participate in group chats and allowing for more cross-grade communication. In addition to general discussions, parents will be able to visit “groups” that focus on specific areas, such as each grade level, sports, curriculum, and volunteer activities.

Parents will be asked to register on the SFDS 411 site before posting anything. Anonymous posts will not be allowed; parents will be asked to use their real names. Parents will be expected to adhere to a set of guidelines meant to keep the communication positive, helpful and friendly. A moderator will help ensure that all posts fall within the guidelines.

The network is expected to be officially launched during the next few weeks. However, Elaine said it may take time for parents to become familiar with the forum and get comfortable using it. In the long run, the network is expected to be an important tool for energizing and building the Day School community.
