Primary Elections at SFDS
By Joel Young
Tips on Talking Politics with your Child
Always be ready to discuss current events and answer questions. Share your memories about historical events that occurred in your lifetime and stories about events in their day. Family stories are often the catalyst for great political discussions, and they can inspire your child to want to learn more about a particular period.
Encourage your child to stay informed. One of my weekly assignments requires that kids read the newspaper, but parents, too, should encourage teens to become aware of what's going on in the world around them through newspapers and magazines. They may grumple, but keep NPR turned in on the car radio. It can provoke great discussions.
For more tips, read Joel Young's article, "Citizen Teen."

The week before the election, 8th graders were given the task to research the candidates, state initiatives, and San Francisco Measures that were on the Primary ballot. Fourteen students then volunteered to give a brief talk about each candidate, proposition, etc. at the Friday morning assembly on February 1st.
Leading up to the election all Upper School students were registered to vote by one of their class representatives. 170 students registered as either a Republican, Democrat, or Green Party member. They were all given a voter registration card.
On Election Day, Feb. 5th, Upper School students voted in designated precincts. We did not have different ballots for each party but let students vote on one common ballot. Here are the results from the SFDS primary election:
