San Francisco Day School Museum of Modern Art
On May 7th & 8th the hallways of SFDS were transformed into the San Francisco Day School Museum of Modern Art. The art show is the culminating project of the whole year's curriculum. Third graders played a key role as docents, leading tours through galleries of student art work inspired by the artists of the month. In their role as docents, they had to review and learn information about every gallery and artist. Following are some of their reflections about the artists that inspired this year's show:
I liked Norval Morrisseau because he had x-ray windows and because it was like one could see into the animal.
I never knew that Georgia O’Keeffe drew flowers up so close it’s like you’re looking at the universe.
Thank you for teaching me about Olafur Eliasson a lot because it looks cool when the light reflects off his sculpture.
I really enjoyed Catalina Delgado Trunk, I never though cuts could be as fine as she makes them
One of my favorite artists was Barry McGee who drew pictures of the homeless and made me take a second look at them and know that they weren’t just trash but they were helpless people that live their life hoping and wishing for luck.
I though Tim Gaudreau is interesting because at first I didn’t think his art looked like art. I thought it was just to let people notice how our environment is changing, but then I noticed that he did do a lot of art.
I never knew that Joseph Cornell worked in shadow boxes. Why, I didn't even know who he was!
Thank you for all the different galliers you took us to, like the Louise Nevelson Gallery at the De Young Museum. I was very excited beforehand because I was actually going to see her work!

Another highlight of this year's art show was the fashion show. This year’s theme, From Trash to Treasure, inspired creative costuming with varied colorful recycled materials including bottles, bags, and newspaper. Students and families strutted down the catwalk to the tunes of the popular student band The Shes.
The San Francisco Day School Museum of Modern Art is a labor of love that takes close to three weeks to set up .The Art Department thanks the 50+ art volunteers who helped set up for the event. A special thank you goes out to the Art Studio Volunteer Co-Chairs Elizabeth Traub and Claudia Jofre for helping coordinate the volunteer efforts and for hanging in until every piece of artwork was hung and every studio was clean.
