One of my greatest joys as the Head Librarian at San Francisco Day School is the excitement students have over summer reading. When the end of the year draws to a close, students stream into the library asking, “When will the list be ready?” or “What’s on the list?” or, my personal favorite, “I’d like to add this book to the list.” The excitement continues in the fall,
when students again stream into the library to share the books they loved reading over the summer. “Loved” is the key word, because EVERYONE should have books they love, especially during the summer. My philosophy is that life is too short and there are too many books in the world to waste on books you aren’t in love with. So read what you enjoy!
The summer reading list is not a required list; it is simply a list of books I think you’ll enjoy. This year, I included a list of family read alouds. All students entering grades 1-5 are asked to keep a reading log that they will submit to me in the fall. Books on the reading log do not have to be from the reading list.
In preparation for a fall workshop with Tim Wise, the entire SFDS faculty, staff, and administration will read White Like Me as our summer read. Highly recommended (OK required) by Dr. Jackson, who has been to several of Mr. Wise’s presentations, White Like Me is an accessible and notable book that addresses a difficult topic. Mr. Wise will discuss his book with the entire Day School community on September 15th at 7:00 p.m. in the gym. I encourage everyone to join the faculty and read White Like Me this summer. If you would like a copy of the faculty book please contact me and I’ll be sure to get one for you. The price is $13.95 plus tax.
Creating a list for an entire community, hoping every will find something they love, is no easy feat, but I do hope everyone finds some new favorites on this summer’s reading list.
