News from Around the School

Kindergarten Investigates Math
Kindergarten students wanted some questions answered in math lab. How many cubes to measure the outside of the four-square game? How many people in the School? How long is the playground?

Their findings: 400 multilinks fit around the four square area, 402 students are in the school, the playground is 77 measuring tapes long and, how many books in the library? Lots!

First Grade Dissects Squid
After getting over the smell of the room, first graders focused intently on learning about about the different parts of a squid. They were eager to cut the squid open, find the ink sac and see if they could really write with it (though some preferred not touch it at all). As you can see we found the ink sac and cut out a few eyeballs too. Who knew squids had three hearts!

Second Grade Studies Landmarks
Each second grader has been recreating a landmark at home and at school. To raise awareness, they worked with a partner to create a brochure about their landmark. To build on this unit, why not take your second grader to their landmark for a field trip?

Fifth Graders Discover the Spiticas
In their culminating social studies project, fifth graders develop the elements of an entirely new ancient culture. These photographs were taken in 3000 BC and highlight the religious ceremony of a little-known civilization called the Spiticas. After conquering the Incas, they moved to an island in Lake Titicaca, Peru, where they continued their worship of spit, llamas, reeds, and the sun.

Sixth Graders Create Polyhedraville
Sixth graders designed and built a model colony of the future. Applying geometric princleples to their worlds, they constructed polyhedra from two-dimensional polygons, such as squares and rectangles They designed and constructured the buildings and planned the layout of the colony - all under the real-life constraint of a monetary budget. .

Midsummer Night's Dream
On May 21st, our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders hopped on three different MUNI lines and traveled downtown to see Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Curran Theatre. Shakespeare plays a prominent role in our 6th through 8th grade English classes, and our students enjoyed seeing a bold interpretation of one of the Bard's most popular plays.

Eighth Grade Endangered Species
For their final project in science class, the eighth grade researched an endangered species of their choice. They created a mask of the animal using plaster wrap. Then, using the masks, they created short films in which they acted out the natural history of their species while wearing their masks. The final products were creative, informative, and often hilarious. Come see the masks on display in the hallway outside room six.

M.A.T.H. Challenge Success
SFDS students participated in the California Mathematics Leauge in February and we and have the results! SFDS was one of the top schools in the league, ranking 18th out of all 153 California schools. Hugo K. placed as one of the top students in the league with a tie for the 20th best score.

In our region (Marin, SF and San Mateo) our school ranked 2nd, with Hugo K. and Stephen D. getting the top 2 scores!

SF Food Bank
On May 17th we had our final group of volunteers help at the SF Food Bank, with the best turn out of the year.  The task was to sort and pack donated items such as canned foods, dry foods, and drinks.  Everyone worked really hard and enjoyed themselves.

Alumni Visit SFDS
May was a big month for SFDS Alumni. Bay Area alums (21+) visited the school on May 21st to meet Dr. Jackson and learn about his plans for the School. On May 27th the Class of 2004 joined together to celebrate their graduation from high school. Both gatherings were high spirited and well attended.
