Online Network Lets Parents Stay "In the Loop"
Do you sometimes wish grade-level coffees could last longer — so you could schmooze more about parenting issues? Do you envy the parents who can hang around the courtyard at pick-up time, hobnobbing with other parents? Do you sometimes feel “out of the loop”?
The Parents Association has started an online network for parents just like you. Called SFDS 411, it’s meant to connect parents within the Day School community — on their own time, at their own pace, from the comfort of their own computer.
The network had its “soft launch” in April, with a few grades being invited to sign up. Currently some 67 parents have signed up. However, it’s expected that every parent in the parent body will eventually become a member. A school-wide launch will take place by September.
“There’s a lot of interest in it in this kind of communication,” said Elaine Foppiano, exiting president of the Parents Association who spearheaded the network this spring.
“I’ve gotten loads of inquiries from parents wanting to know, Can it be used for committee work? Can it be used to recruit volunteers? Can it be used to help organize carpools?”
The answer to all these questions is yes. But more importantly, the network will allow parents to communicate with other and share information about parenting issues such as technology use, bullying, and more.
On the 411 site, there is a group for each class. However, instead of using terms such as “4th grade,” 5th grade,” etc., the site requires parents to know their child’s graduation year — 2011, 2012, etc. There is also a group for parents new to SFDS, and other groups will be formed as needed.
No question, it will take some time for parents to develop the “411 habit,” said Elaine. She recommends that parents bookmark the page and add it to the morning regiment — cup of coffee, check email, check 411.
