If you were at the school on Friday, March 21, you might have thought you had stepped back in time 25 years.
Girls wore lace gloves, bangle bracelets all the way up the arm, and colorful leg warmers. Boys wore T-shirts with vests, porkpie hats, and Converse sneakers. The theme day was a way to get the whole school revved up for CultureFest.
Stylists came in to help lower-school students get gussied up. They re-worked lost-and-found items into ’80s-style clothing, accessorized enthusiastic kids with bracelets and hairpieces, and painted nails in bright colors. Teachers even got in on the fun by dressing up for the event.
At the end of the fifth/seventh grade Talent Share, a group of 16 fifth graders surprised the audience with a performance of Michael Jackson’s Thriller. The fifth graders gave up a week of badminton instruction to learn the Michael Jackson number. A professional dance instructor, Justin Kennedy, was hired to do the magic transformation.
“They were amazing,” said Steve Roberts, fifth grade PE teacher. “The fifth graders were really into dancing. They did it all in two days.”
All 45 fifth graders got to show off their moves during a video shoot of the Thriller performance, which will be shown at CultureFest.
