Poems for the Pod
By Randy Bowman, Third Grade Teacher
WILL
There once was a young lad named Will,
Who asked that I not call him Bill.
Requesting it with such grace
With his seraphic face,
I bless him for his calm presence, still.
JEREMY
There once was a young lad named Jeremy,
Whose facility with words couldn’t scare me.
He used his knowledge and wit
And his comments just fit
So our discussions now sizzle with synergy.
ZAN
There once was a young lad named Zan,
Who showed his humor, wit, and elan.
We knew he was bright
By the facts he’d recite
And declared he’d grow into a fine man.
PARKER
There once was a young lad named Parker,
Whose eyes would get darker and darker.
If kids were teasing a friend
He’d defend to the end
So they wouldn’t touch him or mark her.
CLAUDIA
Claudia was a gentle young lass,
Who never gave her teachers the sass.
She was sweet and kind
And had a fine mind
That added new dimensions to the class.
HARRY
There once was a young lad named Harry
Whose classroom work wasn’t scary.
He’d think to his core
And then think some more.
Was he a good student? Yes, very!
LAUREN
Lauren was a persistent young girl,
Whose hair had nary a curl.
She was kind and sweet
As any you’d meet
And her gentleness makes my head swirl.
NICK
There was a young lad named Nick,
Who loved to talk pretty darn quick!
When asked to slow down
He’d comply and not frown.
And his companions he’d never trick.
SOPHIA
Sophia was a smiling young girl,
Who upon the ice loved to twirl.
She’d skate with such grace
With a smile on her face
And our banners of praise we unfurl.
PAULA
Paula was a senorita from the pampas
Whose smile knocked people katy-whampus.
Her sweet dimpled cheek
Of her humor did speak
Es justo que la adoramos.
MR. McHUGH
I have a colleague and friend named Al
Who has proven to be quite a pal.
He loves to care for our class
And they don’t give him sass.
And he’s married to a mighty fine gal.
CLARE
There is a wonderful girl named Clare
Tied back, was how she preferred her hair.
She also could drum
And make engines hum.
With her classmates she always played fair.
LINDSEY
Lindsey is a great mathematician.
A grammarian with sound erudition.
She is gentle and smart
And speaks from the heart
And we think she’ll make a fine physician.
LEO
The cello Leo plays with great skill!
The instrument he mastered at will
He’d set out to practice
Avoiding the cactus
Our heads with melodies he’d fill.
MAYME
Mayme was having a great second term.
She even bit the head off a worm!
She swallowed it with delight
Though it was a gruesome sight
And made all the onlookers squirm.
EMILY
A lovely girl name Emily Moon
With her violin would play a tune
Her smile was complete
With a melody sweet
Her music could make Mozart swoon.
BEBE
There once was a young lass named Beatrice
Whose intelligence one just could not miss.
She could work problems in maths
While giving Cormick his baths
Even his fleas did marvel at this.
ISABEL
Isabel is a bright as can be.
She has relatives Down Under you see.
To Australia she did travel
To observe a strange mammal
And she shares her discoveries with glee.
MORGAN
Morgan is as smart as a whip.
With her mathematics she could navigate a space ship.
But lacrosse was her game
So ain’t that a shame
And she can recite verse while doing a back flip.
JACOB
Jacob Stillman is quite a good friend.
And good times in art we do spend
He shares the talent he has
With such style and pizzazz
That we don’t want our art classes to end.
JULIEN
Julien is a fine young lad
And he’s usually never angry or sad
He’s uncommonly bright
And wants all wrongs to be right
And won’t let anyone treat anyone bad.
MARIEL
Mariel is new to S.F. Day School,
And she wouldn’t think of breaking one rule.
So quickly she set in
It made our heads spin
And she’s so smart that she’s nobody’s fool.
SPENCER
Spencer is quite an amazing guy!
He has his books stacked to the sky.
He reads stories quite deep
And dreams them in his sleep.
“I thirst for more knowledge!” his cry.
MAX
Oh what a good thinker is Max!
Hard problems his brain cell attacks.
He loves a good challenge
The solutions he’ll manage
And he relishes in obscure, interesting facts.
ZACH
And now we come to our friend Zach
We find that he’s sharp as a tack.
Although we all know it—
He has the heart of a poet
And for friends he never will lack.
MR. B
As your teacher, I, Mr. B,
Find myself blessed as can be.
Each of you’s a grand student
You’re wise, kind, and prudent
Watching you learn sets my heart free.
