All around the Upper School of the San Francisco Day School people are buzzing about March Madness. Not the March Madness you might be thinking of where colleges compete in basketball each spring, but the one where our students actually get to play.
For those of you who do not know what SFDS March Madness is, it is a basketball tournament modeled after the real NCAA tournament in which our students are divided into mixed grade teams each bearing the name of a college. There is a girls’ league and a boys’ league and the games take place during advisory and morning recess. Over the course of two weeks, approximately 110 students participate as basketball players, while their classmates are given the opportunity to take on the roles of photographer, videographer and statistician.
During games, upper school students and faculty crowd into the gym to cheer on their favorite teams. All the teams are competing for the trophy that is passed down from year to year to the winning team. The winning team then goes on to play a group of teachers in a teacher vs. student game. The final games take place next week so if you happen to be around the School on Monday or Tuesday during lunch, drop by the gym for a glimpse of the future of the NCAA. |
