Job Announcement
Co-Teacher
Full-time Non-exempt Position
The Co-Teacher Program provides an opportunity for beginning teachers to start their teaching careers in a collaborative, co-teaching environment. Whereas the Associate Teacher assists in the daily working of the classroom, the Co-Teacher is responsible for all aspects of teaching, in the classroom and beyond, and also benefits from a Head Teacher’s guidance and mentorship.
The philosophy of the Co- Teacher program is twofold, designed to support students and to develop teachers’ skills, knowledge and abilities. First, in order to best serve our students, teachers differentiate instruction to address the needs of the many different kinds of learners. Associate Teachers will plan and execute, in a collaborative way, a differentiated curriculum in all areas. Second, San Francisco Day School values its teachers and wishes to create a dynamic, collaborative, enriching teaching experience that supports teachers at all stages of their career. We do this by having a multi-tiered teaching structure: Associate Teachers, Co-Teachers and Head Teachers. With all three levels at any given grade level, there are exciting mentoring and learning opportunities for all teachers.
Co-Teacher responsibilities include:
- Designing, teaching and evaluating curricular units
- Creating lessons that include differentiated instruction for diverse learners
- Developing units based on own particular areas of interest and expertise
- Communicating regularly with parents, including leading Parent Teacher Conferences
- Coordinating and participating in field trips and the Outdoor Education Program
- Writing student evaluations
- Assuming responsibility for classroom set-up and classroom management structure
- Assuming share of responsibility for lunch and playground, dismissal and arrival duties
- Attending weekly faculty meetings and faculty in-service days.
- Attending various school functions throughout the year including parent potluck dinners, performing arts programs, field days, and evening events.
Yearly contracts for Co-Teachers will begin mid-August of each school year . A New Teachers’ Orientation, required for all teachers new to San Francisco Day School, will be held the week before full faculty meetings begin. Co-Teachers will also attend a Faculty Retreat with the permanent faculty and administrators.
A Co-Teacher must be committed to a career in teaching, and have a minimum of two years experience in a classroom; for example as a Teacher, an Intern or a Student Teacher. A teaching credential is preferred. Candidates must also possess an interest in a communicative, collaborative environment, where feedback and mentoring are important components.
